Recognizing Your Students' Strengths        Donna Wood-Babcock In this workshop we will discuss theories about learning and focus on the Multiple Intelligences Theory of Howard Gardner.  The workshop will cover the different intelligences, how to observe and recognize your own learning style as well as those of your students, and how to develop a teaching style that reaches different types of learners. Donna has made her living as a performer and Circus Arts instructor since graduating from Ringling Bros. Hambone Body Percussion and Original Body Drum        Derique Have you heard and seen the Prescott Circus Theater Kids?!!  This Body Percussion class will concentrate on the authenticity and subtleties of many traditional styles of Hambone body music and is open for all performing and non performing levels with instructions to help you find your own body music style in a spirited fun environment.  Derique has taught hundreds of workshops, residencies, and master classes for performing arts programs, camps, and dance companies throughout the U.S. and abroad. Derique has been performing the African American art of Hambone body percussion since 1978. He won first place in a Hambone contest at James Kinney Park in Berkeley at the age of fifteen. Aerial 101: Trapeze for Kids Mariel Reynolds This workshop is for anyone interested in a beginning or a refresher course in aerial arts.  All ages and levels are welcome. Alixa Sutton is the creator and trainer of the Mystic Pixies, a troupe of professional kid contortionists that perform all over the world. Improvisation: Games and Techniques for Making Stuff Up      William Hall Written and rehearsed bits are great but what do you do when things don’t go as planned?  How can improvisers go on stage and make up stories and comedy routines in the moment? These skills are helpful for all areas of performance. We’ll play games and learn techniques that will help you with spontaneity, character and story. William Hall is an actor, improviser and teacher.   He is the founder of BATS Improv in San Francisco. He is a founding member of the San Francisco based Comedy Theater Group, Fratelli Bologna, where he has helped create more than a dozen original comedies including the Holiday Comedy Classic "The Weber Christmas A charmingly blasphemous Yule tide tale".  William has appeared in numerous feature films including, Twisted, The Right Stuff, Howard the Duck, Leonard Part VI, Murder in the First and Father's Day. Humor Your Performer Moshe Cohen This workshop will be a brief taste of the world of contemporary clowning where the emphasis is on character and humor. The work is twofold: developing and humorizing a vocabulary of physical expression; and two, learning to play this world for, and in inter-relation with an audience. Moshe Cohen is an internationally acclaimed physical humorist and clown, who has played over 2,000 performances in thirty countries. He plays in theaters, international theater festivals, circus and varieté stages.  In addition to performing, Moshe teaches physical humor internationally-in Theater, Circus  and Clown Schools as well Zen and spiritual retreat centers. Teaching Circus Arts to 5 - Year Olds                           Hannah Kahn In this workshop, I would like to share some of the amazing things I've learned from and about kindergarteners.  Hands-on participatory class with time for participants to share further thoughts and activities. CircusYoga                                      Erin and Kevin Maile O'Keefe Building Trust in partnership and groups. How do we meet the others in relationship? How do we come together and build healthy relationships in partnership and groups? How do we foster, bond and maintain them? This experiential workshop and discussion will blend Circus Yoga techniques and facilitated leadership discussions in order to hold and address these vital questions. Erin Maile O'Keefe is a certified Kripalu and Rasa Yoga teacher whose practice is also informed by Viniyoga, Body-Mind Centering and dance. She has taught movement studies to kids since 1981. Kevin Maile O'Keefe is an advanced certified Integral Yoga teacher. Circus and the 6 Essential Needs of Childhood     Dr. Reg Bolton An exploration of the six essential elements of both childhood and circus.  Dr Bolton will illustrate these, drawing on examples from his long experience in many countries.  He will reveal the digital mnemonic which can serve as a personal checklist for any circus teacher, and will invite participants to tell stories from their own circus lives. She studied with Jacques LeCoq in Paris, Ctibor Turba and has a BFA from the U of I Champaign-Urbana, and a Master’s Equivalency from Foothill College. Nancy has toured her award winning BodyTalk™…PowerTools™ program across the country and in the Bay area. As a teacher, Nancy has taught movement and character programs for UCLA, University of Illinois, ACT Young Conservatory, and Berkeley Rep School of Theatre. Juggling Performance Workshop David Hunt, Bobby Hartman, and others! This aim of this 3 hour workshop is for us to create a select number of short, exciting, cool, and fantastic group juggling routines that will be featured as transitions in Friday and Saturday's performances.  Emphasis will be on group juggling skills, the strength of simplicity and having fun.  All participants must be able to at least juggle and pass balls with 1 or more people. PASS IT ON! David Hunt has 20 years experience as a practicing juggler and 12 years performing experience for corporate events, stage performances, film, and television. He has been teaching for the past 6 years and is the co-founder of the New Orleans School of Circus Arts, as well as an AYCO Board Member. Clown Performance Workshop Troy Wunderle, Jeni Johnson, Jamie Coventry, Natasha Kaluza The aim of this 3 hour workshop is to create a series of rip-roaring, guffaw producing, milk-out-the nose funny clown routines that will be featured as transitions in Friday and Saturday's performances.  We'll be working with this year's theme, "PASS IT ON!"  Troy Wunderle is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. He is a former international performer with the Greatest Show on Earth. For the past nine years he has toured throughout the United States as a freelance performer an employee of Vermont’s own Circus Smirkus. His antics have been featured on the Disney Channel, The Today Show, and America’s Funniest Home Videos. Troy is the Creative Director of Circus Smirkus.  Jamie Coventry & Natasha Kaluza are graduates of the first and second year of the Clown Conservatory programs at the San Francisco Circus Center. They have performed with New Pickle Circus, Sun & Moon Ensemble, and Aziza.  They have teach with the Prescott Circus Theater and Circus Smirkus.  Jeni Johnson, has been creating and performing physical theater for over ten years.  She graduated from the San Francisco Clown Conservatory in 2003 and currently teaches and performs all over the Bay Area. Clown Therapy  (3 HOUR WORKSHOP)                                 Paoli Lace The Clown Therapy Workshop will be an experiential, hands-on class with practical kinesthetic learning of clown therapy techniques, in conjunction with discussion of the theory and rationales for their use.   A holistic approach to meeting psychological and physical challenges, clown therapy has been successful with health issues where mind, body and a sense of humor need to converge. Clown Therapy is noted for serving people with special needs at the crossroads of creative arts, psychotherapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.  Dress:  Able to move freely, possibly get messy. The  "Founder and God-mother of Clown Therapy", Ms Lacy is the author of The Clown Therapy Handbook; trains facilitators of Clown Therapy; and consults about Clown Therapy Programs, with over 20 years experience with people with emotional & physical disabilities.  Ms. Lacy began her career as a performing clown and continues to direct plays and circuses including Dell 'Arte Players Company, Vaudeville Nouveau, and The Brass Band. Alexander Technique for Adults Christina Vecchiato This workshop will introduce you to the basic principles of Alexander Technique.   A brief overview of Alexander’s discoveries will be explained. Simple activities such as walking, standing, and sitting make up the basis of classroom exercises.  Each student will also spend time in practical applications including activities such as writing, talking, and physical activities (juggling/handstands/singing).  This class is designed to bring about a greater awareness of their own movement patterns and how to consciously move with ease. Christina is a certified Alexander Technique teacher.  In addition, Christina holds a B.F.A in Theatre Performance and is a graduate from the S.F. Circus Center’s Clown Conservatory.  In addition to performing, Christina has been teaching circus arts and gymnastics in the bay area for the last five years.  She looks forward to meeting AYCO participants of all ages who are interested in building more awareness in their own movement. Circus Photograpy                           Corey Gordon This workshop will is about creating good photographs of circus performances with a particular emphasis on youth circus.  We will address the particular challenges and opportunities unique to the circus environment: lighting, fast-moving acts, ineffectiveness (and potential danger) of flash, etc.  Other topics will include composition, planning a shoot, and relating with your subjects.  Developing and editing with Photoshop and printing techniques will also be covered.   Corey Gordon is a lawyer, father of two youth circus performers with Circus Juventas (Jared, 14 and Lian, 9), and an avid circus dad as chairman of the board of Circus Juventas (St. Paul, MN). Gordon has been an amateur photographer since junior high and has been photographing Circus Juventas over the past 6 years. After attending Tannen's Magic School in New York, Robert groduated from Towson University in Maryland.  His education included acting, mime, speech, voice, comedy, improvisation, and business. Robert now tours as an internationl entertainer and director.  He coaches variety artists and corporate executives on how to improve their  business sense and "performance skills." Rigging for Non-Riggers                                 Warren Bacon This session is designed to introduce the concepts of rigging systems used in youth circus.  The content will cover the various components of a rig of any type (will touch on trapeze rigs, wire rigs, ground support rigs, suspended rigs, and single and multiple point equipment) and the basic principles of load analysis and component selection in order to illustrate how all of the parts come together into a system and how you make wise choices in selecting rigging components. The idea  behind the session is to give the participants tools that will enable them to work effectively with their riggers in developing safe and efficient systems for their programs. Warren Bacon is a former professional circus aerialist and acrobat who now teaches for youth circus programs and, through his company, Which Way Is Up? Consultants, designs, builds, and installs circus apparatus as well as specialty rigging systems for circuses, theaters, dinner shows, parks, and specialty displays such as a real motorcycle in a dealership. Teaching Teachers How to Teach Juggling Hovey Burgess and Judy Finelli Two of the most recognized and respected jugglers and circus educators of our time present their approach to "Passing It On!" Hovey Burgess, a past president of the International Juggler Association, has been juggling wrangler at Circus Flora for a dozen years. HE has been teaching circus techniques to acting students at New York University for the past thirty-eight years. He was circus choreographer for the motion picture Popeye. Judy Finelli is the co-founder of the San Francisco Circus Center as a project of the Pickle Family Circus in 1984.  Judy Finelli co-founded the San Francisco School for Circus Arts (now Circus Center) with Wendy Parkman and was the Artistic Director of the Pickle Family Circus from 1987 through 1990. She received a BFA in theatre, film and television from NYU School of the Arts in 1970. Judy has performed with many of the premier circuses (including Circo dell 'Arte and Circus Vargas) and has taught at many prestigious institutions (NYU, Julliard, etc.). Spanish Web and Corde Lisses/Rope            Meg Elias-Emery Students will learn the basic climbing techniques. Then moving on to more advanced/ straddle climbs/ upside down climbs/ toe climb. Students will learn spinning from the hand and foot loop and web sitting. On the Tightwire: The Art of Keeping Yourself in Balance                                              Meret Ryhiner Isn't it where we all would like to be, "The happy place" - weightless and perfectly centered on the lines of the universe?!  A little technique and a lot of exercises from a veteran circus performer might go a long way towards that goal!  For Beginners and Experienced! Meret Ryhiner, born in Bern, Switzerland, performed her solo tightwire act and her Balancing trapeze act extensively in the U.S.A. and Canada from 1982 - 1992.  She has been an instructor with the New Orleans School of Circus Arts since Summer 2000. Torn napkins will be restored as if by magic. This workshop teaches sleight of hand and magic with everyday objects. Previous magic experience welcome but none is required. Attendees of this workshop will leave able to apply their newfound skills to circus and other forms of performing. For the past fifteen years, Michael has brought his unique brand of performing to audiences across the United States and Europe.  Michael has studied at the San Francisco Circus Center and is a graduate of the prestigious Clown Conservatory in California. Bogatin This informal discussion covers the range of legal issues that surround circus performers, educators, and programs.  Topics including copywrite, liability, insurance, and contract law will be discussed.  Bring your questions and a notebook. Jackie Davis is a founding board member of AYCO. She is the founding director of the circus arts education program and the annual curricular Hilltop Circus for middle school students at the Pine Hill Waldorf School in Wilton, NH. Jackie co-created the Flying Gravity Circus with high school students which inspires school circus programs in the U.S. and Canada through performances and workshop residencies. Youth Circus from Our Perspective: A Discussion with CircEsteem’s CircusTeens CircEsteem Teens Youth will discuss their progress in Circus skills (Chicago Youth Circus), in the classroom (HomeWork & CircusWork) and as role models (CircusTeens) while providing an overview of these CircEsteem’s programs. Workshop participants will be asked to jot down a moment they remembered in their circus experience.  These notes will be collected and drawn from a hat to spark a sharing and discussion. We hope that festival youth will come and will share with each other their experiences and hopes for the future. Vivian Clement,  Donald Keme, and Emanuel Tawiah have been learning, earning, teaching, and performing with CircEsteem’s Chicago Youth Circus for over two years. Vivian Clement and Donald Keme both traveled to AYCO 2003.  All youth were born in Africa and they will share stories of their journeys and the opportunities Circus has offered them. They serve as CircusTeens and are paid for their work teaching CircEsteem’s First of Mays beginning circus skills. Eric Emert served as a volunteer for years and is now CE’s prop builder and technical director, he also traveled to AYCO 03’. Eric will moderate this workshop. Aerial Teachers Workshop, Manual Presentation Carrie Heller This is an opportunity for aerialists, gymnastics, dance and P.E. teachers to learn the basics of teaching and spotting aerial equipment.  This workshop includes the use of The Aerial Safety and Training Manual, an introduction to basic aerial apparatus, instruction in spotting techniques, discussion of rigging, dealing with Student fear, and more. Carrie Heller, M.S.W. is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Aerialist. In 1988 she combined her unique combination of skills to develop "Circus Arts" and in 1993 "Circus Camp" which serves over 1000 children each summer. Carrie has done Circus Arts Therapy with individuals, families & treatment centers. She has been involved with Cirque Du Monde: A Cirque Du Soleil Outreach Program and offered training for Circus Camp in Georgia, Camp Winnarainbow in CA, The Circus Day Foundation in St. Louis and elsewhere. Commedia for Circus Performers                                      Dic Wheeler Commedia dell’ Arte is a masked, partially-improvised presentational theater form created in Italy in the sixteenth century. It has survived and adapted itself to contemporary culture for nearly five hundred years, sharing with circus a special spot at the “illegitimate” fringe of the theater world. Both are alive and well today.   This physical workshop will give circus performers and directors an opportunity to explore and play with the performance style and archetypal characters of traditional and contemporary commedia, with an emphasis on how this style can benefit and be integrated into circus performance. Every circus artist is an actor, and the techniques of the commedia actor are essential training for circus performers.  May contain (or generate) some mature material. Dic Wheeler is the Artistic Director of Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater in Middletown, CT. and founder of the Children’s Circus of Middletown, a community summer circus program now in its seventeenth season. Minitrampoline for Juniors           Donald Hughs Learn to fly through the air with the greatest of ease, you don’t even need a flying trapeze. This minitrampoline workshop will cover the basic approach and skill progression needed for this acrobatic apparatus.   Tumblers of all levels are invited to participate and will be worked with on an individual basis at whatever their current skill level.      Donald Hughes is Assistant Coach of the Circus Day Foundation. He best known in St. Louis for his fabulous flips from the minitrampoline over Flora the elephant in Circus Flora. He was one of the original St. Louis Arches in 1989. He has toured with Circus Flora and the Circus Kingdom. Aerial Conditioning for Performance           Sara Hylas Do you want to be an aerialist?  It starts with body strength!  This workshop will cover fundamental aerial conditioning and certain “trick specific” conditioning.  Incorporate these techniques into your training and become stronger, allowing you to achieve higher-level tricks and choreography.  Conditioning will take place on the ground as well as in the air. Sarah competed in USGF gymnastics for eight years as a child before crossing over to spring board diving as a teenager and eventually discovering flying trapeze.  She has worked withTrapezium (based in Montreal), Club Med, and all of the SF Bay Area's flying rigs.  She has taught acrobatics and aerial skills with the SF Circus Center since 1999.  This past year, she started a circus program at a NYC public school.  For her alter ego, she moon lights as a middle school history teacher. Splicing and Terminations (Splicing 101)                       Warren Bacon Rigging is an art, a craft, and for a few, a profession.  Ther art of rigging includes the termination of wire and fiber rope through a variety of mechanical and hand techniques.  This workshop will include hands on work including the eye splice and back splice in fiber ropes, the Flemish eye splice in wire rope, and the proper use of wire rope clips, swaging tools, and a review of basic knots used in today's high tech kernmantle rope.  This workshop will give the participants the skills they need to insure proper terminations. see bio under "Rigging for Non-Riggers," Workshop #402.
