this workshop starts at zero and takes you through the steps to a final
act. For teachers, this workshop takes
the mystery out of how to put it all together. Whether you are not yet skilled, highly
skilled, or somewhere in between, you will be able to create circus acts
after this workshop. |
Jackie Davis is a founding board

| Youth
Circus from Our Perspective: A Discussion with CircEsteem’s CircusTeens |
CircEsteem Teens |
Youth will discuss their
progress in Circus skills (Chicago Youth Circus), in the classroom (HomeWork
& CircusWork) and as role models (CircusTeens) while providing an
overview of these CircEsteem’s programs. Workshop participants will be asked
to jot down a moment they remembered in their circus experience. These notes will be collected and drawn
from a hat to spark a sharing and discussion. We hope that festival youth
will come and will share with each other their experiences and hopes for the
future. |
Vivian Clement, Donald Keme, and Emanuel Tawiah have been learning, earning, teaching, and performing with
CircEsteem’s Chicago Youth Circus for over two years. Vivian Clement and
Donald Keme both traveled to AYCO 2003.
All youth were born in Africa and they will share stories of their
journeys and the opportunities Circus has offered them. They serve as
CircusTeens and are paid for their work teaching CircEsteem’s First of Mays
beginning circus skills. Eric Emert served as a volunteer for years and is now CE’s prop builder
and technical director, he also traveled to AYCO 03’. Eric will moderate this
workshop. |

| Commedia
for Circus Performers |
Dic Wheeler |
Commedia dell’ Arte is a masked,
partially-improvised presentational theater form created in Italy in the
sixteenth century. It has survived and adapted itself to contemporary culture
for nearly five hundred years, sharing with circus a special spot at the
“illegitimate” fringe of the theater world. Both are alive and well
today. This physical workshop will
give circus performers and directors an opportunity to explore and play with
the performance style and archetypal characters of traditional and
contemporary commedia, with an emphasis on how this style can benefit and be
integrated into circus performance. Every circus artist is an actor, and the
techniques of the commedia actor are essential training for circus
performers. May contain (or generate)
some mature material. |
Dic Wheeler is the Artistic
Director of Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater in Middletown, CT. and founder
of the Children’s Circus of Middletown, a community summer circus program now
in its seventeenth season. A graduate of the Dell’ Arte School of Physical
Theater, Dic has been teaching, directing and performing commedia dell’ arte
and circus for over twenty-five years throughout the United States and in
Europe. |
