!!! ANNOUNCING....
2006 AYCO Educators Conference on Social Circus
Fall 2006 - Chicago

Written by: David Hunt
Diddnola9@aol.com

AYCO is proud to announce its 2006 Educators Conference which will focus on
the topic “Social Circus.” This event is projected to include a 4-5 day
training for Social Circus Educators and a 2 1/2 day weekend conference
composed of workshops and roundtables. We are planning to hold the Conference
in the early fall in Chicago, IL.  We are very exited that Paul Miller and CircEsteem have stepped up to host the event.

This email is an all out call for Planning Committee Members!!!  At this
time, I am acting as the AYCO Board Liaison to initiate the first stages of
planning for the conference.  Committee Members will be charged with working
with the Conference Host and the AYCO Board in the planning and coordination
of the conference programming and logistics.  Monthly meetings are
recommended once a committee is formed.

Chair people will be working with additional general committee members to
take part in using their heads, hearts, and skills in planning a very
exciting conference.

A handful of people have already expressed their willingness to assist with
the planning. Thank you to all of you.

If you are interested in stepping up and taking part in the planning, please
email me
Diddnola9@aol.com
with your areas of interest for participation and
all of your contact information.

At the start, we need:

Programming Committee Chair The Programming Chair will oversee all
programming for the weekend part of the  conference (2 1/2 days) including
workshop presentations, roundtable discussions, and any special events
during the weekend (e.g., site visits, performances, fun activities, etc.)

Logistics Committee Chair The Logistics Chair will work closely with the
Host(s) to arrange and coordinate Transportation, Housing, space needs,
equipment needs, and food / catering (if decided).

Fundraising Committee Chair The Fundraising Chair will work to secure
donations, grants, and /or sponsorships to offset the costs to provide
scholarships for attendees, stipends for presenters, and conference expenses
(space/equipment rental, material needs, etc.)

If you have suggestions and ideas, please forward them to me to aid in
the planning process.

Thank you all and I look forward to the work ahead,
David Hunt

From the Safety and Standards working group:
As the lead in this project, I am acting on the result of a conversation at the recent Festival in which it was suggested that AYCO draft a risk management statement as a prelude to beginning the standards drafting procedure.  If any AYCO member organizations or even if you are not a member (which you should be) are willing to share your risk management policies with us, I would appreciate your contacting me directly (rig2@aol.com) with your input.  I would like to form a formal working group which follows the ANSI program for standard development so if you are interested in helping, now is the time to get on board.

New President of AYCO!

AYCO Founder Kevin O'Keefe (left)

and new president, Orlene Gentile

Orlene Gentile of Fool Time Circus www.fooltimecircus.org was recently elected by the board as the new president of the American Youth Circus Organization. This past April, Kevin O’Keefe www.circusminimus.com stepped down from the position he has held since founding the organization in 1999.

In 2001, Kevin and festival director Erin Maile O’Keefe headed the first-ever American Youth Circus Festival in Sarasota FL in collaboration with Sailor Circus www.sailorcircus.org, and they were instrumental in producing the second national festival in St. Paul MN with Circus Juventas www.circusjuventas.org in 2003.  In 2004 they organized AYCO’s first gathering of circus educators, the AYCO Aerial Teachers’ Conference, in Brattleboro VT with Nimble Arts www.nimblearts.org (2004).  Thank you, Kevin and Erin!

Orlene served as co-director of the 2005 AYCO Festival, hosted by San Francisco’s Circus Center, with Circus Center Program Director Peggy Ford. Orlene is enjoying heading up the AYCO board and festival team.  Welcome, Orlene!

Circus Smirkus Needs Your Help
Due to "a deficit situation that has been brought on by years of continued debt, a bad year at the box office and unbudgeted expenses", Circus Smirkus has been forced to fold its tent, layoff staff, and cease operations, at least for now. "We are down, but not out," says founder Rob Mermin. Smirkus is now urgently trying to raise $250,000 before a deadline of December 30, so they can continue. For more information and to find out how you can help, see www.americanyouthcircus.org/newsletter/smirkus.htm. You can make a contribution (that will be matched) at www.smirkus.org.

Hurricane Katrina Affects New Orleans Circus Programs
This past August, Meret Ryhiner attended her first AYCO Festival, coming from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.  She has been teaching circus for countless youth in and around New Orleans over the past 5 years.  Many of you may have taken her very popular tight wire class, met her during the Social Circus discussions, or simply met her around the festival.  On Monday, August 29, the arrival of Hurricane Katrina prevented Meret from heading home for several days. Since returning home, she has faced a great deal of loss personally and professionally between lost / ruined equipment (mats, juggling props, etc.) and teaching jobs temporarily on hold.

Meret has been active as a programmer and principal instructor with the New Orleans School of Circus Arts.  Over the past two years, she has been leading circus classes with KidsmART, www.kidsmart.org, which "teaches positive life skills to under-resourced children through the performing and visual arts."  The organization delivers visual and its programs to students in New Orleans public schools and community centers in the after school hours.  Not only has Meret experienced loss, but many of her students from New Orleans East and downtown have been displaced due to the hurricane.  The public schools have yet to re-open in the city but Echo Olander, director of KidsmART, is planning on resuming programs once this takes place.

Please take some time out to send good thoughts towards New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.  When one is effected, we are all effected.

If you know of any other individuals or programs that are a part of our youth circus community that have experienced loss due to this year's hurricanes, please contact David Hunt, diddnola9@aol.com
