Do You Have Appropriate Crash Mats in Your Aerial Studio?

There is an old saying that goes, “It is not the fall that kills you, but the sudden stop at the end.” The primary purpose of a crash mat (aka a landing pad) is to increase the stopping time/distance of a fall and therefore reduce the magnitude of the impact on the landing surface. Despite all that is known about the crash mats’ ability to reduce the magnitude of the impact following a fall, there are many aerial studios using inadequate crash mats, or no crash mats at all. Injuries resulting from falls on inappropriate crash mats can lead to expensive lawsuits against the studio. The purpose of this presentation/discussion is to discuss standards and professional practices concerning the use of crash mats for different athletic activities, including aerial arts.
